An example of this is the myth that HFCS is some kind of sugar our bodies are incapable to use properly. This idea is not true at all! High-fructose corn syrup, is a mix of two simple sugars called monosaccharides: glucose and fructose that occur naturally in food such as apples or even carrots. These sugars can be used and metabolized by our bodies like any other sugar you eat.
One misconception is that HFCS is unhealthier than other sugars. Still, according to research HFCS is no worse for you than plain old table sugar or honey. All of them have virtually the same effects on our bodies. Conclusion The important thing is that we should limit all sugars and sugar carbohydrates — by eating them rarely (if at all) as part of a healthy diet.
The problem is not only with HFCS, but consuming too much sugar as a whole. This is another reason to consider how much sugar intake per day we are doing. We also need to remember that sugar is high in calories and low in nutritional value so it is important for us balance our diet by instead eating at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day, basing meals on specific foods:spaghetti bolognaise style dishes based with whole grain pasta, substantial enough tomato will make the most difference.
Our bodies handle HFCS a little differently than regular table sugar. HFCS is metabolized in the liver whereas table sugar must be digested and broken down by enzymes (first, sucrose [a disaccharide] into glucose and fructose) synthesized in both the small intestine as well as other tissues. Here is the good news: We get almost identical energy from both HFCS and table sugar. So regardless if we eat HFCS or table sugar, it provides our bodies with roughly the same amount of energy.
HFCS is often used in many highly processed foods with a lot of calories but little to no nutritional value, so consuming an excess amount can lead weight gain and ultimately obesity. Such foods are able to, effectively trick our bodies into making us consume more than we actually require and that is clearly not a good thing.
Eating too much sugar, including HFCS also increases your risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. If we eat too much sugar, our bodies may resist the hormone called insulin. Over time, with repeated exposure to these higher levels of insulin we develop a resistance and this is what causes many health issues long-term including the diabetes mentioned above — keep in mind too that heart disease also plays into all things metabolic.
HFCS is present in many processed foods–pick any of the sweet ones and you can be sure it has been loaded with HFCS. These things are generally high in sugar and calories, but low on nutrition that helps keep our bodies healthy. So, we need to watch out on how much of those sugary foods that are eating.
